A legacy of leadership and friendship

Post Created: 16 August 2024

In a heartwarming and significant moment for Onemda, our CEO, Simon Lewis, recently had the privilege of catching up with two of the organisation's most cherished figures: Thelma Dowell OAM, Onemda’s founder, and Janet Dalton, retired Business Manager. This meeting over lunch was more than just a reunion; it was a testament to the enduring legacy and values that continue to guide Onemda today.

A Legacy of Compassion and Commitment

Thelma Dowell’s vision and dedication laid the foundation for Onemda, and her influence is still very much alive within the organisation. Known for her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities, Thelma has always been a beacon of inspiration. Her legacy is not just in the bricks and mortar of Onemda’s campuses but in the very ethos that drives the organisation’s mission to provide high-quality disability services.

After the lunch, Simon Lewis shared his thoughts, saying, "I am always honoured and feel a great sense of privilege whenever I spend time with Thelma. Since being at Onemda, I have always ensured that her wisdom and legacy will never be lost and that the foundation's spirit and commitment to providing high-quality disability services in local communities plays an ongoing role in shaping Onemda into what we are today. Thelma is such an inspiring and intelligent person to be around, and I always learn something new from her every time I see her. She truly is a national treasure!"

A Stalwart of Stability and Growth

Janet Dalton’s name is synonymous with Onemda’s growth and success over the decades. With a career spanning nearly 40 years at Onemda, Janet played pivotal roles in finance, business operations, and administration, ensuring that the organisation not only grew but thrived. Her contributions have helped Onemda earn a well-deserved reputation for excellence in the sector.

Reflecting on his time working with Janet, Simon added, "Janet Dalton would be best described as an Onemda constitution. During my early years at Onemda, I worked closely alongside Janet and found her to be a person with great integrity, energy for life, and a fun sense of humour. The passion and dedication of many people over many years still to this day shape Onemda’s ways of working. It is people like Thelma and Janet who truly are the DNA of Onemda."

Looking Ahead with Respect for the Past

This reunion underscores the importance of Onemda’s rich history and the people who have shaped its journey. Simon’s commitment to preserving the organisation’s core values, while continuously innovating and expanding its services, ensures that Onemda remains true to the vision that these important figures helped to create.

As Onemda continues to grow and adapt to the changing needs of our community, the wisdom and legacy of leaders like Thelma and Janet remain a guiding light. Their contributions remind us that while the future is full of potential, it is our past that has given us the strength and direction to move forward.
