From Farm to Table: A Berry Sweet Adventure in Kinglake

Post Created: 19 February 2025

Participants from Onemda’s Paddock to Plate program recently embarked on a hands-on learning experience at Highham Blueberry Farm in Kinglake, and it's safe to say it truly was a fruitful day!

Led by Bil Brosch, instructor of the Paddock to Plate program at Glenroy Neighbourhood Centre, the group had the opportunity to explore the farm, learn about sustainable berry farming, and, of course, pick their own delicious blueberries to take home and share with their families.

More than just a fun day out, this experience reinforced valuable life skills in food sourcing, nutrition, and sustainability, connecting participants with the journey of food from the paddock to the plate. By seeing first-hand where fresh produce comes from, they gained a deeper appreciation for healthy eating and sustainable farming practices.

The smiles were as plentiful as the blueberries, with participants enjoying the chance to engage with nature, connect with friends, and build confidence in an interactive, real-world setting. Many were excited to bring their fresh picks home and incorporate them into their next meal, where discussions were had on whether they were to be used in either a smoothie, a homemade dessert, or simply enjoyed by the handful!

Experiences like these highlight the power of inclusive, hands-on learning, where participants can explore, discover, and develop important skills in a supportive and engaging environment. A big thank you to Bil Brosch and Highham Blueberry Farm for making this experience possible!
