How occupational therapy can assist you

Post Created: 23 September 2024

Occupational therapy (OT) at Onemda is all about enhancing independence and improving the quality of life for our participants. Guided by our dedicated occupational therapist, Georgia Taylor, we provide comprehensive support to help individuals engage more fully in their daily lives.

A broad spectrum of support

Occupational therapy is a versatile field. At Onemda, this means addressing a wide array of needs, from personal care and life skills to fine motor skills and sensory integration. Georgia explains, "My role is to increase people's independence in anything they want to do, which is quite broad. We focus on life skills like personal care and fine motor skills such as handwriting and using utensils. We also incorporate sensory approaches in various activities."

Our OT services extend to providing and assisting with essential equipment. Whether it's bathroom aids like commodes, rails, beds, or assistive technology for daily tasks, we aim to find solutions that promote independence. "We look at all the functions of everyday life and try to find solutions to increase independence. If that's not possible, we find alternative solutions through assistive technology or training for those around the participant," says Georgia.

Real stories, real impact

The impact of OT at Onemda is often seen through the success stories of our participants. While immediate feedback might not always come from the participants themselves, their families often share the positive changes they observe. Georgia recounts, "A participant recently learned to tie their shoelaces independently. We achieved this by teaching it in a different way, looking at it through a different lens, and they were able to do it."

These achievements, no matter how small they may seem, significantly boost the confidence and independence of our participants, helping them navigate daily life more efficiently.

Accessibility across all campuses

Currently, Georgia is the sole OT at Onemda, providing services Monday through Friday across all our campuses and even conducting home visits when necessary. This flexibility ensures that participants can receive the support they need, no matter where they are.

Why occupational therapy matters

Occupational Therapy at Onemda is not just about direct intervention but also about educating and training families and carers. "For families who have a participant that could benefit from OT, definitely enquire and have a chat. We can assess someone's daily life and routines and find areas where they could benefit, even if it's not through one-on-one sessions," Georgia advises.

Our approach might involve carer training or suggesting small adjustments that can make a significant difference in the participant's life. This holistic and inclusive approach ensures that everyone involved in the participant's life is equipped to support their journey towards greater independence.
