Reptiles raid Onemda with Sensory success
Post Created: 20 January 2025
The Doncaster East campus recently had an extraordinary and unforgettable experience as reptiles of all shapes and sizes slithered, crawled, and scurried their way into the hearts of Onemda participants. Thanks to a specialised reptile visitation program, participants were treated to the rare opportunity of getting up close and personal with these fascinating creatures in a safe and supportive environment.
From the cool, smooth scales of a snake to the gentle textures of a turtle’s shell, the visit offered a sensory wonderland. For many participants, interacting with the reptiles wasn’t just an exciting novelty, it was an experience rich in therapeutic and sensory benefits.
Engaging with animals, particularly through touch, sight, and sound, has been shown to enhance sensory processing and regulation, which are crucial skills for people with disability. The unique textures, temperatures, and movements of reptiles provided participants with opportunities to explore new sensations in a controlled and calming setting. For individuals with sensory processing challenges, this hands-on experience offered a chance to build confidence, reduce stress, and foster a sense of curiosity about the natural world.
The reptiles themselves acted as gentle educators, sparking conversations, questions, and learning moments among participants. Observing the animals’ slow, deliberate movements encouraged mindfulness, while their vibrant colours and unique characteristics captured imaginations and stimulated creativity.
Beyond the sensory and educational benefits, the visit was a source of pure joy and connection. Participants lit up as they held, touched, or simply observed the reptiles, many expressing excitement and awe. For some, it was their first interaction with animals of this kind, making it a day of personal milestones and triumphs.
At Onemda, we are committed to creating enriching experiences that empower participants and enhance their well-being. This reptile visit was a perfect example of how interactive activities can bring people together, foster new skills, and create unforgettable memories.
As we reflect on this remarkable day, we celebrate the courage and enthusiasm of every participant who embraced the opportunity to explore the world of reptiles and all the sensory wonders they have to offer.
