The Basin's Big Freeze

Post Created: 07 August 2024

In a heartwarming and spirited event this past June, The Basin campus of Onemda joined the nation in the 'Big Freeze' fundraiser to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The day was filled with excitement, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose as participants and staff came together to support this worthy cause.

The 'Big Freeze' is an annual event that has captured the hearts of many, with communities across Australia coming together to participate in the iconic ice bucket challenge. Most notably, the cause compliments the King's Birthday AFL clash between Collingwood and Melbourne with The Big Slide pre-match that sees celebrities from all walks of life enter a large body of icy water by coming down a slide! This year, The Basin campus took the plunge, quite literally, to show their solidarity and commitment to the fight against MND.

Three brave staff members - Paula, Bianca and Aiden, volunteered to be drenched in icy water, much to the delight of the participants. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation as the buckets were filled and everyone gathered around, eager to witness the chilly spectacle.

The event kicked off with a brief introduction to the cause, emphasising the importance of raising funds for MND research. Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, wasting, and loss of mobility. With no cure currently available, fundraising efforts like the 'Big Freeze' are crucial in supporting ongoing research and providing care for those affected by the disease.

As the countdown began, cheers and applause erupted from the crowd. All at once, the staff members took their positions close together, showing immense courage and good humour. The participants, many of whom have formed close bonds with the staff, were given the honour of tipping the buckets. The expressions of joy and excitement on their faces were priceless as they gleefully doused the staff members with the freezing water.

Paula, Bianca and Ayden were officially drenched, eliciting a wave of laughter from the crowd.

Throughout the event, the sense of community and shared purpose was palpable. Participants, staff, and even some family members joined in the fun, sharing stories, enjoying refreshments, and celebrating the success of the fundraiser. The day was not only about raising money but also about fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.

The Basin campus' participation in the 'Big Freeze' was a testament to the spirit of Onemda. By coming together for a common cause, the campus demonstrated its commitment to making a difference, both within their community and beyond. The funds raised will contribute to vital research and support services for those living with MND, offering hope and assistance to many.

"We are incredibly proud of our staff and participants for their enthusiasm and generosity," said Onemda CEO, Simon Lewis. "Events like the 'Big Freeze' show the power of community and the impact we can have when we come together for a good cause. It's moments like these that truly embody the spirit of Onemda."

As the event drew to a close, there was a collective sense of achievement and gratitude. The Basin campus not only raised funds and awareness for MND but also created lasting memories and strengthened the bonds within their community. The success of the 'Big Freeze' serves as a reminder of the incredible things that can be accomplished when we work together.

The Basin campus looks forward to continuing their support for important causes and scoping out potential members to take part in next year's event. In the meantime, they will carry the warmth and joy of this year's 'Big Freeze' in their hearts, a shining example of the positive impact that community efforts can have.
