Xtend: Where Connection, Confidence and Community Come Alive – Just Ask Thomas

For Thomas, Tuesday nights are something to look forward to. Since joining Onemda’s Xtend program in 2023, Thomas has become a well-loved member of a growing community where connection, fun and independence come together after hours.
Designed to extend learning, social and lifestyle opportunities outside of the traditional 9 to 3 service hours, Xtend offers a safe, engaging and supportive environment for participants to explore new interests, connect with friends and build valuable life skills.
Thomas has embraced it all.
Whether it's heading out for a BBQ at the park, getting active with a round of bowling, or simply spending time with mates, Thomas thrives on the social side of Xtend.
“I like hanging out with my friends and chatting with the staff,” he shares with a smile. “Bowling is fun. The BBQs are good too!”
But there’s one activity he’s especially excited to grow in: cooking.
Thomas lights up when talking about Xtend’s hands-on cooking sessions and has big dreams of trying new recipes and building his kitchen skills. “I like cooking and want to learn how to make more dishes,” he says. “It’s fun when we all cook together.”
With the guidance of dedicated staff like Emerson, Maddie, Ethan and Padma, who Thomas says are “awesome to work with,” participants like Thomas are supported to try new things, step outside their comfort zone, and gain the confidence to express themselves and their interests.
And that’s the heart of Xtend: creating opportunities beyond the day-to-day where adults with intellectual disability can continue to explore, grow and enjoy life on their own terms.
As Thomas continues to make new memories with friends and staff at Xtend, his story reminds us that community doesn’t clock off at 3pm, and neither do opportunities for growth.
