Dear Participants, Families & Carers,

We hope it’s been a good week, and that those of you who took a holiday yesterday enjoyed your day. Please make sure you take the time to check this week’s updates as some information may affect you, or the person in your care.

In this edition, we’ve included some handy contact information – and of course, just click on the buttons above to check the latest and most up-to-date information.

ONEMDA COVID RULES RELAX FURTHER

We know it’s been a frustrating few months for Onemda program participants, families and carers as COVID guidelines for the disability sector have lagged behind those in the wider community. The good news is that we are now able to enjoy some greater freedoms – not quite ‘back to normal’ but getting close! Here’s what has changed:

  • NO MORE PODS! It’s great to see everyone catching up with their friends and enjoying the run of their campuses.

  • VISITORS are still welcome on site... However, we do ask that you make an appointment, wear a mask, and only visit if you are feeling well.

  • STAFF SMILES! – you will now be able to see the smiling faces of Onemda staff and participants … at least while they are outdoors on campus. Masks will still be required indoors and when taking part in group activities out in the community.

LATEST NDIS OUTCOMES REPORT RELEASED

The NDIS tracks and reports on how the lives of NDIS participants is changing over time as they access supports and services made possible by the scheme.

The report is based on information from the latest NDIS Outcomes Frameworks survey that asked questions on topics from daily living, to choice and control, social and community participation, learning and employment, health and wellbeing, relations and home life – and, specifically, whether the NDIS has helped. You can read the latest report by clicking the link here...

FREE RAPID ANTIGEN TEST KITS (RATS)

Victoria’s Health Minister has announced that free Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) will be available on request from all Victorian libraries and other council-run services, in order to help detect and combat COVID-19 in the community. People with disabilities and their carers can get up to 20 free tests. Read all about it here.

Ability Fest is proudly Australia’s first all accessible music festival and one of the leading inclusive events in the country. A non-for-profit event, Ability Fest has hosted some of the biggest names in music and raised almost $500,000 for the Dylan Alcott Foundation. These funds have helped young Australians living with a disability fulfil their potential through their grant program. With elevated platforms, pathways, a dedicated sensory area, quiet zones, companion ticketing, ramps, friendly volunteers, Auslan interpreters, accessible toilets and more help make Ability an inclusive and enjoyable environment for all music lovers.

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHT

DONCASTER EAST – HIGH CARE & WELLBEING (HCW)

High Care & Wellbeing have welcomed 5 new program participants – each one has been getting to know their new environment and connect with staff and participants in the room. We have a wide range of programs scheduled for this term which include -

Social & Communication Skills – this will incorporate Onemda Council once per month and 4 participants from the Living, Learning & Social Skills groups will also join this program, some of whom are the Onemda Council representatives. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about Onemda Council and get involved with projects and advocate for our participants.

Stephanie Alexander, (Garden to Plate) - the purpose of the program is to introduce pleasurable food education. The emphasis is focusing on flavours, as well as learning about health benefits of fresh seasonal food. Activities will include gardening made fun and educational, and cooking.

With the acquisition of a new wheelchair accessible vehicle, we will have rotating community access to give all participants the opportunity to visit places of interest. This is excellent news to ensure we get everyone out and about into the community and exploring!

We will also have our usual variety of programs including Armchair Travel, where we experience places and cultures locally around the world, Exercise & physio to maintain health and wellbeing, plus Creative Arts where participants will work on individual and group art projects.

We will also be accessing Therapy services, including the warm water pool, which is so beneficial for many participants to assist with achieving their goals.

We are all very excited for 2023 and look forward to updating you in our next campus highlight!

Please enjoy your weekend and stay safe in the heat!
