Onemda Weekly eNews - Friday 9 December 2022

Dear Participants, Families & Carers,

Welcome to your weekly news from Onemda as we race towards the end of the year! As always, there are plenty of updates this week, so please take the time to read through as some information may affect you, or the person in your care.

ONEMDA CLOSING DATES…

It hardly seems possible that we are nearly at the close of another year. Like many of you, we will be taking a break over Summer. All Onemda campuses will be closed from 3pm Friday 23 December 2022 and will reopen on Tuesday 17 January 2023.

To view our list of important/closure dates for 2023, you can find the most up-to-date version by referring to this link.

THANK YOU, THELMA! LUNCH WITH OUR FOUNDER

We are so fortunate to have the ongoing support, insight and interest of our founder, Thelma Dowell OAM.

Thelma was instrumental in the formation of Onemda in 1969, and through her tenacity, empathy and foresight, she helped build the foundations of our organisation. While much has changed over the past 53 years, we continue to follow her inspirational lead as we seek to support people with disabilities to achieve their goals and live the lives they want.

This week, Simon Lewis, CEO and Jarrah Overton, GM Shared Services, were honoured to have lunch with Thelma and another incredible Onemda supporter, Janet Dalton. A huge thank you to Thelma, Janet and all those who set the standard we aspire to meet every day.

IMPORTANT CARPARK REMINDER – STAY SAFE!

The carparks at our Onemda campuses can get very busy, particularly at drop-off and pick-up times, and we have recently had a couple of instances where inattention could have resulted in very serious incidents.

Please, if you are visiting an Onemda campus at any time, or transporting someone to or from their programs, please travel under 10km an hour at all times in carpark areas and pay careful attention to your surroundings, watching for people who may be moving from in between parked vehicles.

If you are leaving your vehicle for any reason, please make sure you’ve put your handbrake on and secured the vehicle safely.

Thank you for helping keep everyone safe!

PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH PROJECT

We are currently seeking participants to join a research project run by MedTechVic (Swinburne University) in collaboration with Onemda. The research will look at new approaches for enabling better postural support for clients.

Have you ever wondered how positioning affects quality of life? We want to hear from you, the experts in this topic.

We are looking for people who:

  • Require postural support, OR
  • People who implement postural support for someone as a carer or therapist.

You will be remunerated for your time.

Please feel free to share this information with your network.

HAVE YOUR SAY ABOUT THE NDIS

The NDIS Review is a chance for you to provide your feedback. Its approach is to ‘LISTEN’ and ‘LEARN’ from people who have lived experience of disability, and the ‘PRIORITISE’ actions based on the information received.

There are many ways that you can have your say. Plus, it’s fully accessible, so you can provide your input online, over the phone, via video or by writing in.

Are you ready to have your say about the NDIS?

CAMPUS HIGHLIGHT

GLENROY – LIVING, LEARNING & SOCIAL SKILLS (LLS)

There’s never a dull moment at Glenroy LLS…

This group has been busy taking part in a load of activities! They won first prize in the Onemda Halloween competition, which was a much-enjoyed event for both participants and staff! They have also created a beautiful artwork piece, which is an Indigenous inspired sign featuring the word ‘Onemda’. The Glenroy cohort also took part in celebrating International Day of People with Disability, made decorated cookies and cakes and we are currently making Father Christmas, sleigh, and reindeer artworks to get into the spirit of the festive season!

Glenroy LLS have added two new programs for participants to take part in next year, these include Certificate 1 in Transition to Education and, work experience at Brite industries.

Next year we are expecting to start the Xtend trailer at Glenroy LLS. Participants will be able to serve hot drinks to our local community and be out and learn valuable customer service and hospitality skills whilst on the job. We’ll keep everyone updated on the progress of this as news comes to hand.

We hope you enjoy your weekend! In the meantime, as always, if you have any questions about anything in this newsletter don’t hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

The Onemda Team
